Chapter FL1-K Couple of the Year 2010

Danny and Kathy McIlrath

Danny was born in Rapid City, South Dakota as his father was in the Air Force.  They then moved to Texas and then to Georgia where he stayed until his mid 20’s.  Danny had two daughters from his first marriage, Beth and Kim.  Kathy was born in Daytona Beach and moved to Ormond Beach when she was nine and has stayed there ever since.

Danny owned a trucking company when he married Kathy on April 2, 1982.  She didn’t want to go to any of the big cities like LA, Chicago or New York City though.  So after their honeymoon off they went; they loaded in Orlando and went straight to LA, then New York City, and then Chicago.  They advanced from household movers to high value, then air suspension, crane, and turn. Their deal was they would stay in the truck until they started a family and then they would get out of the trucking business.  So four years later when Christopher was born they were out of trucking.  Actually Danny was in the process of purchasing a Goldwing when Kathy got pregnant (after a very long wait) so he cancelled the deal.

Danny is the fleet supervisor for the City of Ormond Beach.  He is a Master Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) and a Master ASE in Large Trucks.  He serves on the National Board for testing and certifying EVT’s.  Kathy is the bookkeeper for Allstar Building Materials, Ltd.  She was in the founding efforts VFRSA (Volusia/Flagler Roofing and Sheet Metal Association) where she served as Treasurer for almost ten years along with other duties.

Danny and Kathy have both worked heavily in Cub Scouts, Boys Scouts, Ormond Beach Youth baseball, and served on the board for the Law & Government Academy at Atlantic High School.

A couple of years ago they decided to start riding motorcycles again.  They purchased a Yamaha Stratoliner and put on 11,000 miles in just less than a year.  So when Christopher moved to Gainesville to work for the University of Florida Police Department they decided since they were going to ride a lot to trade it in on a 2008 Goldwing.  They love riding it especially the trips they make to Georgia to see their grandson Hunter and their granddaughter Dani Leigh.  And yes, she is named after her grandfather.

They joined GWRRA before they bought their 2008 Goldwing.  They are closer to the Daytona Beach Chapter but chose FL1-K because of its size.  They now serve as MEC (Membership Enhancement Coordinators) and Danny as Goodie Sales.  We are proud to award them Couple of the Year for 2010.
